Fire Chief Provides Year End Report On Saugeen Shores Fire Department

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

184 calls for service, 12 property fires.

2019 was a busy year for the Saugeen Shores Fire Department.

Thousands of hours were committed by the volunteer firefighters to service calls and training.

Fire Chief Phil Eagleson was presenting his year end report to the town's Committee of the Whole meeting on February 10th.

In 2019, 184 calls for service were received, resulting in over 2,850 hours of service assisting residents.

Fortunately only 12 calls were for property fires.

The biggest number belongs to false alarms at 61 which Eagleson says, the majority could have been prevented with a simple task

Eagleson says it doesn't happen often but many homeowners stand the risk of being charged costs to answer a false alarm.

He says his group committed 4,650 hours to training in 2019.

Eagleson says, "We're at full strength now and we have a really dedicated group of volunteers; men and women at both fire stations (in Port Elgin and Southampton.)

The fire department is at full strength with a contingent of 50, with 25 at each station.
