The Saugeen Shores Police Service has received a community donation in support of its K9 program.
Sgt. Andy Evans says the program received a $500 donation from the St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge in Southampton on Feb. 17.
The K9 unit includes a specialized officer who works with a service dog named Riker to perform various tasks.
“The K9 program is almost, if not entirely supported by grassroots donations and support from the community. So what we are looking at using this money for, we have to identify acute need,” says Evans. “The money will probably be directed towards a new search and rescue or tracking harness for canines.”
The lodge is an organization which supports not only the community but globally.
“To have a pipeline of money supporting the program, is very important to maintain it and make sure it is viable. With this program and community support in place, it makes our community a lot safer,” says Evans.
