Grey Bruce OPP is providing some tips for Snowmobile Safety Week.
Local police will be participating in the initiative until Feb. 17, which aims to promote public awareness and encourage safe driving.
During the initiative, police will be addressing the factors contributing to snowmobile-related injuries and fatalities, which include aggressive driving, distracted driving, and improper use of safety equipment on highways, trails, and waterways.
Some key snowmobile tips from police include:
-Driving sober
-Stay on designated trails
-Be cautious on frozen waterways
-Wear protective gear
-Carry a safety kit with waterproof matches, a pocketknife, a compass, a whistle, ice picks, and a first aid kit
-Observe speed limits
-Plan your route and inform someone of your planned route
-Ensure you have proper documents including required permits to operate your snowmobile legally
“The Grey Bruce OPP is also responding to growing concerns from property owners within the detachment area. There have been increasing reports of snowmobiles using improper mufflers, creating excessive noise, and damaging fields beneath the snow due to riders straying off marked trails,” says Grey Bruce OPP in a release. “We encourage snowmobilers to be mindful of others and follow all safety guidelines to minimize risks on the trails and roads.”
