Hanover may be getting a new splashpad this summer as part of a multi-phase project to upgrade the town park.
Town council approved awarding an over $809,000 contract to Yard Weasels/ABC Recreation during a meeting in December to develop the 275 square meter splashpad.
Mayor Sue Paterson says, “This is a significant step forward for this project, and we can’t wait to see families enjoying the Canadian Tire splashpad in the very near future.”
CAO Sherri Walden says the splashpad council approved to move forward with this year, is part of the Centre of Excellence Park Development project which council received in 2023.
The Centre of Excellence project aims to create a greenspace in the town to be larger in size than a typical neighbourhood park and include several features and amenities like playground and skateboard park enhancements.
“The town completed a conceptual plan for a centre of excellence park development and so really that centre of excellence is a park that would be considered a destination park. I would liken it to Harrison Park in Owen Sound where there is lots of different elements. Hanover Park, which is our main park on 7th Avenue was chosen and identified as the main location for that. The conceptual plan is many phases and phase one is splashpad development because it was deemed that was a suitable location for the splashpad,” says Walden.
She adds the splashpad is currently the only phase which has concrete numbers and planned timing.
“Providing outdoor space that has amenities that many people can enjoy and we know that our Hanover park is a beloved park, this phased development, specifically the splashpad, will help to rejuvenate that area. We look forward to attracting not only our Hanover residents to use that space, but also visitors who are coming through or to our community,” says Walden.
Construction of the splashpad is expected to begin as soon as the weather permits, and Walden hopes it be completed by early summer.
