Poppy Campaigns are getting underway, leading up to Remembrance Day.
Last Sunday, the Owen Sound legion launched its campaign at the Cenotaph.
Like many events this year, the poppy campaign will be different. The Owen Sound Legion will not have volunteers canvassing the community with Poppy boxes.
Instead, Poppy boxes will be stationed in many stores around Owen Sound.
Donations to the Poppy fund can also be made at the Owen Sound Branch of the Royal Canadian legion.
In a statement, the legion says its poppy campaign is the foundation of its Remembrance Program.
Owen Sound Legion President, Patty Sargent-Gibson says it’s only one of the many activities the Legion organizes that leads up to Remembrance Day on November 11th, “Canadians are very generous. As a result of their generosity, we are able to ensure that Veterans and their dependants are cared for and treated with the respect they deserve, as well as foster the tradition of remembrance amongst our youth.”
She adds,”As members of the Royal Canadian Legion, we strive to keep the memory of the thousands of Canadian men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Canada.”
Legions have missed out on many fundraising and revenue gathering opportunities this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
